The house layout is never that clear with a question of how the kids wouldn't figure things out sooner over the many years. In retrospect, it doesn't make sense that her father would lock her in the basement so that she could easily find the secret entrance to the dungeon. This starts with the flashback to her childhood home. She reluctantly goes home and finds her estranged angry brother Christian (Bruce Davison) with two daughters Imogen (Caitlin Gerard) and Melissa (Spencer Locke). She gets a call for help from Ted Garza who lives in her childhood home in New Mexico. In 2010 California, Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) fights paranormal demons with Specs and Tucker. She unlocks a forbidding red door allowing a demon to escape and getting her mother killed. Her father beats her for claiming to see the dead and locks her in the basement. In 1953, Elise Rainier lives with her loving mother, her abusive prison guard father, and her young brother Christian next to the prison. Sense is not a strong suit here, the latter stages being at times convoluted. Any attempts at twists were generally not surprising and ended up not being very plausible. Script lacks tautness and has some humour that felt misplaced, overdone and jarring with everything else. There is very little new here or much to set it apart from what was seen before, being even more derivative than the first three entries which lacked originality too but not like this. Capped off by an ending that's cheesy, ridiculous and anti-climactic. The latter parts of the previous three films also went over-the-top after being restrained at first, but not to this extent. The last third comes over as too silly and over-the-top, the suspense and dread diminishing and the lack of sense and stupidity increasing. Some of the film is on the dull side, with it unlike the first three films taking the restraint of some of the early parts too far, which was more of a problem with the scares being infrequent and not as effective as before. It does lack tension and suspense all the way through and other scares are predictable, more silly than creepy and felt like throwing in as many horror elements as one can muster regardless of originality, parts feel recycled too. Regrettably, 'Insidious: The Last Key' has drawbacks. Some nice restraint here and there.Īcting is not bad at all, with the best assets being Lin Shaye's ghoulishly gusto-filled performance, something that was consistent throughout the whole franchise, and the interesting development and character of Elise.
